Sleep Cool This Summer with a Wooly Pillowtop

Posted on

getty_rf_photo_of_woman_sleeping_with_electric_fan

Most people would assume that wool is used only to keep you warm on cold winter’s nights.  They don’t realize how amazing wool is, and that it can actually help you keep cool in the summer.

When customers mention that they are getting too hot when they sleep, we often suggest either the Wooly pillowtop or the Wooly Lite.  Both these pillowtops are filled with plush layers of our organic Eco-Wool.  Wool is a great natural heat regulator, and actually wicks body heat and moisture away from you during warm nights.  (It also helps regulate your body temperature during the cold winter months, so it’s a great choice year-round.)  The Wooly is covered in certified-organic cotton sateen, and its feel closely resembles that of a feather bed, adding a nice, luxurious feel to any mattress.

The Wooly (3”)

The 3″-deep Eco-Wool Wooly is well suited for sleepers who need a softer surface depth or who enjoy a bed with a “nesting” feel. (Depth is approximate.)

Starting at $545

The Wooly Lite (1.5″)

WoolyLite

The economical 1.5″-deep Eco-Wool Wooly Lite is perfectly suited for the sleeper who needs just a little extra surface cushioning. (Depth is approximate.)

Caught up in Cotton

Yesterday, I was walking out of my house and realized my entire outfit was made out of cotton. It got me thinking about the fact that it wasn’t made out of organic cotton, but conventional cotton. I thought I would do a little bit of research as to why one would choose organic instead. Here’s what I found…

iChat Image(S5v)

  • ·Approximately14.1% of global insecticide sales in 2009 were used to grow cotton.
  • ·Worldwide, annual cotton pesticide sales increased approximately 18.5% in the decade between 1999 -2009, from $2.564 billion to $3.038 billion.
  • ·Of the $3.038 billion, 28% was for herbicide sales, 58% for insecticides, 3.5% for fungicides, and 10% for “other” pesticides such as defoliants.
  • ·In 2008, global cotton production used almost 7% of all pesticides (including defoliants, herbicides, and insecticides), 5% of the world’s herbicides, and 16% of the world’s insecticides in terms of sales.
  • ·In the United States, 2009 sales of pesticides for use on domestic cotton amounted to $687 million, representing 23% of total global cotton pesticide use.
  • ·On average, 90% of U.S. cotton is genetically engineered.
  • ·Eight of the top 10 insecticides most commonly used on U.S. cotton in 2010 are classified as moderately to highly acutely hazardous by the World Health Organization.
  • ·Approximately 45 million pounds of pesticides were used on approximately 11 million acres of cotton planted in the United States in 2010.
  • ·The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2010 in the United States as “possible,” “likely,” “probable,” or “known” human carcinogens.
  • ·The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2010 in the United States as “possible,” “likely,” “probable,” or “known” human carcinogens.
  • ·Eight of the top 10 insecticides most commonly used on U.S. cotton in 2010 are classified as moderately to highly acutely hazardous by the World Health Organization.
  • ·Over 2.03 billion pounds of synthetic fertilizers were applied to conventional cotton in 2000 (142 pounds/acre), making cotton the fourth most heavily fertilized crop, behind corn, winter wheat, and soybeans (USDA).
  • ·It takes roughly one-third of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just one T-shirt.

Aww Sheet

Posted on

As I threw my sheets in the washing machine last night, I caught myself wondering if I wash my sheets enough.  At once every two weeks it already feels like I am always changing my bedding, but I did a little research anyway on the recommended time between washing sheets anyway, to see what the world has to say on the subject.

 PF_ClothesLine

You wouldn’t think it would be a very hot topic, but everybody seems to have very different and (strong) views on washing sheets.  Some people are religious about washing them every week, while others don’t see the point in changing out bedding but once a month.  There are the fanatics out there that change their sheets several times a week, and studies have even found Western cultures in which changing the sheets only three times a year is the norm.

If you only wash your sheets once a month and you sleep an average of eight hours a night for 30 nights, that’s 240 hours on your sheets every month, or the equivalent of wearing the same clothes for 10 days straight (with fewer mustard stains, I would guess).

Your body, even straight out of the shower, will slough off dead skin cells (which attract dustmites), hair, dirt, oil, and sweat.  And when it comes off of you, that means it’s staying in your bed.  (Just writing that out makes me rethink my every-two-weeks sheet-changing regime.  A change to once a week is definitely in order!)

On mornings when you don’t change your sheets, pull your covers back when you get up and let your bed air out while you shower or eat breakfast.  And even though it may feel like just another thing to do in the morning, taking a couple of minutes to make your bed will make it that much sweeter to climb back into it at night, plus it will help keep dust and pet hair out.

I keep extra sheet sets in my linen closet to make for an easier change on sheet day.  I can pull the old sheets off and put the new ones on right away, so if I don’t get to laundry that day, it’s not a big deal. Avoid storing sheets in plastic containers, which can trap moisture and help with the growth of mildew.

Frequent washing will break down even the highest quality sheets. Replace them when you see obvious signs of aging, such as stains, faded patterns or fraying hems.

Textile Truths: A Parent’s Guide

We are an organic company, so using organic products is a no-brainer for us.  But we have to remember that not everyone has the same immersion into the world of organics, and new parents need to know when it is essential to choose organic products.

This great info-graphic,  put together by our friends at Harmony Art, is a great visual aid for new parents, and puts the “how” and “why” of buying organic for your baby into an easy-to-digest graphic that takes away the guessing game:

Man’s best friend deserves a comfy organic bed too!

Do you think of your pet as a part of the family? They need just as much care and adoration as you would give a child, right? I know our National Sales Rep, Whitney, would agree with this statement. I have seen her with her sweet lil’ pup, Tootsie, and she’s like her four-legged daughter. So of course she is going to take extra care of her lil’ lady!

What would be a better present for miss Tootsie this Christmas than an OMI pet bed?

Just as synthetic materials outgas in our own beds, these same materials can be hazardous to our pets. Research has found that aromatic oils in red cedar can be a direct cause of respiratory or allergic reactions in small animals. With an added cover made with synthetics and chemical dyes, your poor lil’ guys may not be sleeping as soundly as you might think.

Our organic pet beds are filled with 100% certified organic cotton and organically grown buckwheat hulls sewn inside separate chambers. The separate chamber design allows pets to customize their bed to their own special shape, and ensures years of comfort. The smaller round bed, great for cats or very small dogs, is constructed with an outer ring of 100% natural rubber.

Along with our pet beds, we make a removable washable cover made from heavy-duty colorgrown organic cotton canvas in an attractive sage green color.  (Colorgrown cotton is cotton that grows in colors naturally, without bleaches or dyes.)

OMI Pet Beds are available in three sizes:

Large: For pets up to 120 lbs. – 36″ x 48″ – Wt. 28 lbs.

Do you need a new pillow?

I just came across this great blog from our sister company, Lifekind.  I figured I would share it with you:

How do you tell when you need a new pillow?

We all have a favorite pillow on our bed that we love and gravitate toward. Mine has a special pillow cover, so I know exactly which one it is. It started out so nice and tall, and slowly, over time, became as flat as a pancake without my even realizing how much it was changing. It got me thinking: How do we really know whether a pillow is right for us or when it’s time to replace it?Here are some questions that can help you determine when it’s time to replace that beloved pillow. A “Yes” answer to any question is a good indicator it may be time to move on:
Is your pillow misshapen or lumpy?  Place it on a flat surface. Rather than laying flat,  do you notice lumps or a misshapen surface?
Does your pillow fail the “force test”?  For latex pillows, place your hand in the center of the pillow and push down. Is there sufficient resistance, or does your hand go all the way down to the surface underneath? For down pillows, fold them in half and then let them go. Natural-down pillows should slowly regain their shape, while synthetic down should spring back quickly. If they don’t, it may be time to move on.
Do you ache when you wake up in the morning?
Did you buy your pillow more than 24 months ago?
Do you wake frequently to readjust your pillow or change your head’s position?  Having an inadequate or uncomfortable pillow can cause pain and prevent a restful night’s sleep. If your neck or back hurt, it may mean your pillow isn’t properly supporting your neck throughout the night.  If you wake up periodically to readjust your head, it’s also reducing the amount of rest you’re getting. Without good, deep sleep, it can be harder to function throughout the day.Discovery News posted an article explaining why pillows become heavier as they age: “With just two years of use, one-third of a pillow’s weight is comprised of dead skin cells, bugs, and dust mites and their droppings.”  (For more information on what may be inside your pillow, visit Discovery News HERE)

After I read this, I went home and checked my pillow, and found that my pillow needed to be replaced too! I chose the Crush 100% Natural Shredded Rubber Pillow for myself, while my husband enjoys a firmer pillow, so I am thinking a great holiday gift would be the Molded 100%-Natural Rubber Latex Pillow! I also saw the importance of a Pillow Barrier Cover for our pillows, to protect them from the things that we don’t want getting into them.
