Foundations 101: Understanding Support and Function

Posted on

OMIFoundationArrow

When buying a new bed, you might generally think about finding the right mattress, then dressing up your bed with new linens.  Often the foundation for a mattress is completely overlooked.  A foundation not only provides support, but can also help the mattress in other ways.

First, the foundation ensures proper air circulation, which helps lessen the chance of mold and mildew.  Second, it provides fabric-to-fabric contact so the mattress does not rub against a rough surface such as the wood or metal of a frame. Lastly, it allows you to adjust the height of the mattress from the floor.

Natural rubber mattresses are recommended to be placed on wood-slat foundations, while innerspring mattresses should be placed on box-spring foundations.

OMI offers both types of foundation:

Innerspring-path-white

Our 8″ box-spring foundation is constructed with 2″-thick boards of cabinet-grade, untreated, kiln-dried fir. The heavy-duty steel springs (free of potential toxins from solvents and oils) are covered with a layer of durable organic cotton canvas, padded with organic cotton batting, then upholstered with the same organic quilting materials as our mattresses.

wood-found_-cutaway-white

Our wood-slat foundation is made of cabinet-grade, untreated, kiln-dried fir. A layer of durable organic canvas is placed over the 2″-thick boards, padded with certified organic cotton and pure wool batting, and upholstered with the same organic quilting as our mattresses. Slats are spaced approximately 2.5″ apart. The wood-slat foundation is made in several different heights: 2”, 3.5”, 8”, 10”, and 12.”

You don’t need a foundation if you have a platform bed. The slats on the platform bed should be between 2” and 3” apart and between 2” and 3” wide.  If your platform bed consists of a solid surface, the mattress will not ventilate properly and will be subject to mold or mildew. We recommend our Wool Underbed Pad to protect your mattress from rubbing on the slats and developing wear over time.

Sleep Cool This Summer with a Wooly Pillowtop

Most people would assume that wool is used only to keep you warm on cold winter’s nights.  They don’t realize how amazing wool is, and that it can actually help you keep cool in the summer.

When customers mention that they are getting too hot when they sleep, we often suggest either the Wooly pillowtop or the Wooly Lite.  Both these pillowtops are filled with plush layers of our organic Eco-Wool.  Wool is a great natural heat regulator, and actually wicks body heat and moisture away from you during warm nights.  (It also helps regulate your body temperature during the cold winter months, so it’s a great choice year-round.)  The Wooly is covered in certified-organic cotton sateen, and its feel closely resembles that of a feather bed, adding a nice, luxurious feel to any mattress.

The Wooly (3”)

Wooly

The 3″-deep Eco-Wool Wooly is well suited for sleepers who need a softer surface depth or who enjoy a bed with a “nesting” feel. (Depth is approximate.)

Starting at $575

The Wooly Lite (1.5″)

WoolyLite

The economical 1.5″-deep Eco-Wool Wooly Lite is perfectly suited for the sleeper who needs just a little extra surface cushioning. (Depth is approximate.)

Starting at $395

Our cozy, cozy Eco-Wool Comforter

It’s officially winter, and with the winter months come those warm blankets. But wouldn’t it be nice to not have to pull out those extras just because it’s a bit chillier? I recently spoke with a customer who was looking for a good solution for her and her husband. The problem is that her husband gets really hot during the night, and she always gets cold. They can never agree on a thermostat setting, much less the number of blankets that should go on the bed.

The OMI Eco-Wool™ Comforter is the perfect solution for this couple. One of the most appealing qualities of wool is that it naturally regulates body temperature. With its ability to retain air, it’s a great insulator, and its wicking properties keep your body from getting hot and sweaty while you sleep. Basically, it will keep you cool during the summer months, and nice and warm during the winter.  Wool is warm yet breathable, which prevents overheating and the accumulation of moisture, mildew, and mold. We designed it with a special quilting pattern to eliminate clumping and hollow spots.

As with most organic products, there are some special considerations to take note of, since you can’t just toss our comforter in the washing machine. It should not be wet washed or dry cleaned. We recommend spot cleaning with a live enzyme cleaner, (a great option is available from our sister company, Lifekind (available HERE) and periodically airing it out in the sunlight to maintain freshness. Sunlight is a natural rejuvinator for wool. It will actually spring the wool fibers back to life and help maintain its loft.

Do you need a new pillow?

I just came across this great blog from our sister company, Lifekind.  I figured I would share it with you:

How do you tell when you need a new pillow?

We all have a favorite pillow on our bed that we love and gravitate toward. Mine has a special pillow cover, so I know exactly which one it is. It started out so nice and tall, and slowly, over time, became as flat as a pancake without my even realizing how much it was changing. It got me thinking: How do we really know whether a pillow is right for us or when it’s time to replace it?Here are some questions that can help you determine when it’s time to replace that beloved pillow. A “Yes” answer to any question is a good indicator it may be time to move on:
Is your pillow misshapen or lumpy?  Place it on a flat surface. Rather than laying flat,  do you notice lumps or a misshapen surface?
Does your pillow fail the “force test”?  For latex pillows, place your hand in the center of the pillow and push down. Is there sufficient resistance, or does your hand go all the way down to the surface underneath? For down pillows, fold them in half and then let them go. Natural-down pillows should slowly regain their shape, while synthetic down should spring back quickly. If they don’t, it may be time to move on.
Do you ache when you wake up in the morning?
Did you buy your pillow more than 24 months ago?
Do you wake frequently to readjust your pillow or change your head’s position?  Having an inadequate or uncomfortable pillow can cause pain and prevent a restful night’s sleep. If your neck or back hurt, it may mean your pillow isn’t properly supporting your neck throughout the night.  If you wake up periodically to readjust your head, it’s also reducing the amount of rest you’re getting. Without good, deep sleep, it can be harder to function throughout the day.Discovery News posted an article explaining why pillows become heavier as they age: “With just two years of use, one-third of a pillow’s weight is comprised of dead skin cells, bugs, and dust mites and their droppings.”  (For more information on what may be inside your pillow, visit Discovery News HERE)

After I read this, I went home and checked my pillow, and found that my pillow needed to be replaced too! I chose the Crush 100% Natural Shredded Rubber Pillow for myself, while my husband enjoys a firmer pillow, so I am thinking a great holiday gift would be the Molded 100%-Natural Rubber Latex Pillow! I also saw the importance of a Pillow Barrier Cover for our pillows, to protect them from the things that we don’t want getting into them.
