How to Choose the Right Pillow for You

I never thought about how a pillow can affect your quality of sleep and even your quality of life, but it really does make a huge difference in both respects. I grew up, as many of us do, sleeping on cotton or wool pillows. There are so many different types of pillows, and they are all meant for a variety of purposes. So how do you choose the right pillow for you?

Your pillow preference will depend on many factors, including your size, shape, and preferred sleeping position/s. A pillow that is good for a stomach sleeper may not have enough support for a side sleeper. Some pillows are better for people who suffer from allergies. Some can last much longer than others. OMI offers a variety of great pillows to meet your personalized needs. They are made with certified organic Eco-Wool™, certified organic cotton, 100%-natural rubber latex, and/or organic buckwheat hulls, in a variety of styles and comforts and covered in a luxuriously soft certified organic cotton cover.

So how do you know which pillow is right for you?

For those of you seeking a firmer, flatter pillow, our cotton pillows are filled with pure, sanitized 100% certified organic cotton.

If you’d like a pillow that feels soft and springy, offers natural body-temperature regulation, and compacts less than cotton, then our Eco-Wool™ pillow is for you!

Latex pillows are my personal preference. I am a back and side sleeper, and I LOVE how latex instantly conforms to and supports my head and neck. OMI’s molded latex pillow has a comfortable medium support, and is perfect for when I am sleeping face-up. It supports my head and neck without pushing back too much on my head.

The contour pillow is great for side sleepers. It contours to the curve of your neck and successfully keeps your head and neck aligned by filling in the space between your head and shoulders. It has a lower side and a higher side, so you have the choice of less or more support. Plus, dust mites hate latex, which makes them great for people with allergies, and OMI’s 100%-natural rubber latex pillows do not offgas harmful chemicals.

Fried Greens Meatlessballs, a Delicious and Healthy Summer Snack

Summer is a fantastic time to visit the farmer’s market and buy all fresh and in-season produce! When I go to the farmer’s market, I will leave with armloads of delicious, fresh produce. Sometimes, I purchase more than I can use. To fix the problem of excess produce, I have taken to the internet in my search for recipes as to not let them go to waste. I stumbled upon a fantastic recipe from Food52, Fried Greens Meatlessballs. This recipe is great for using any leftover greens and turning them into a yummy snack or appetizer.

Serves 3 to 4 as an appetizer

  • 1 bunch greens
  • 3
tablespoons olive oil or grapeseed oil
  • 1
small yellow onion, diced
  • salt, to taste
  • 2
 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1/2
cup cilantro
  • 1
tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1
 cup fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1/4
cup crumbled feta
  • 1 or 2
eggs
  • oil for frying

Pulse greens in a food processor or finely chop with a knife—they should be small but not puréed or mushy. Set aside.

Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat and add the oil, onion, and salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly browned, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic, cilantro, and cumin seeds. Stir for 30 seconds.

Add greens to pan and sauté for a 1-2 minutes, until they have wilted. Turn the mixture into a large bowl.

Let cool for five minutes, then add the breadcrumbs and feta. Mix well, then taste for seasoning. Add more salt if necessary. Crack one egg into the bowl and mix. Squeeze a small ball of the mixture and if it holds together, begin portioning out the remaining mixture into small balls. If the balls do not hold together well, add another egg.

Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add balls to pan—they should sizzle when they hit the oil—then turn heat down to medium or medium-low. Cook until golden, about 2 minutes. Use a fork to flip the balls to the other side and cook for another 2 minutes or so.

Serve immediately or at room temperature.

8 Ways for Non-Morning People to Become Morning People

IMG_0239

Mornings can be a rough time of day if you’re not a morning person. It’s a time when you run around trying to get yourself ready and gat all your stuff together, and in the end you’re stressed and grumpy. As frustrating as morning can be, it’s a great time to change your attitude and start the day off right. Here are some ideas on how to become more of a morning person.

1. Relocate Alarm Clock

Blue_alarm_clock_(1)

Move your alarm clock to a location you can’t reach from your bed, such as across the room. This will force you to get up and out of bed to hit the snooze button, making it harder for you to climb back into bed and fall asleep.

2.Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Be sure you get deep and restful sleep by not watching TV before bed. Be sure to leave all other devices, such as cell phones, laptops, etc., away from your bed, as they can overstimulate you, disrupting your sleep. Rather than play on your phone, curl up with a good book.

3. Don’t Rush

Part of the reason people hate mornings is the feeling of being rushed. So rather than run around like a crazy person, organize your things in preparation for the next day, have your outfit selected and ready to go the night before. Make lunch ahead of time, and have your things ready and together so you don’t have to spend any time running around looking for your misplaced keys or that missing shoe.

4. Welcome the Sun

280757752_92b7d27043_z

Go ahead and open the curtains and let the sunshine in. The bright natural light will help you wake up naturally.

5. Develop Habits

Stilles_Mineralwasser

It has been shown if you repeat the same action for 15 days in a row, it will become a habit. So the moment you wake up in the morning, drink a glass of water. If you try to go back to sleep, chances are that you’ll need to use the restroom, destroying your ability to go back to sleep.

6. Preset Your Coffee Maker

A_time_for_a_cup_of_coffee

If you have a coffee maker with a preset option, use it! Having your coffee brewed and ready to go before your feet even touch the floor is definitely an incentive to get out of bed. If your coffee maker doesn’t have a preset option, set it up so all you have to do is hit the brew button, creating one less task to do in the morning.

7. Exercise!

Jogging_Woman_in_Grass

Wake up and take a walk. Walking around the block will get you up and your blood flowing.

8. Reward Yourself

Now that you have been waking up early and are on your way to being that morning person, treat yourself to something you enjoy. Take yourself out for a delicious lunch, or buy that item you’ve been eyeing.

However you tackle the day, try to make the morning less painful and more enjoyable.
